Roderick Pullum. Naked Girls Reading kicked off the new year and new decade with their presentation of Weirder Science at the Margo Jones Theatre.
Cast members included Courtney Crave, Kitty Martini, Claret Kelly, Black Mariah, and Rayne Drawps. Literary topics ran the gamut including tales about the miserable existence of the male Anglerfish, the origin of the anti-vaccination craze, clueless doctors who discovered the vibrator was a good cure for female "hysteria" and the ongoing destruction of our planet due to climate change.

Then the readings began, courtesy of host Nasty Canasta, a local orange-haired burlesque star who was asked by NGR founders, Michelle L'Amour and Franky Vivid, to head up the New York branch.
Over the course of the night, we heard Woody Allen's standup routine "The Lost Generation," Lorrie Moore's short story "How to Become a Writer," portions of How to Eat Like a Child by Delia Ephron, FahrenheitA Clockwork OrangeFear and Loathing in Las Vegasand, the most provocative piece, a selection from Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Once I got used to the fact that there was a quartet of naked women in front of me, that element actually became less prominent.
Nobody was flaunting their birthday suits or preening; it was almost a wholesome kind of nudity. The words took center stage and I found myself focused on what I was hearing far more than what I was seeing.
THEY FORGOT TO TURN OFF THE CAMERA AND DID THIS
That's not to say I forgot that the women were nude; when Nasty Canasta closed out the night by reading about "nymphettes" from LolitaI found it jarring. The nudity combined with her familiarity with the text threw me.
Of the choice, Nasty Canasta said, "I'm very conscious that Lolita in particular is a problematic work for many people because of the nature of the story, but I really just wanted to share a piece of writing that I love.

There was beer for sale, but no one was drinking to excess. The mixed gender environment is a selling point not just for women.
I spoke to year-old Brooklynite Ross Mernyk. Though he's not much of a reader, he considers it a fun date night with the bonus of eye candy.

Host Nasty Canasta told me that being onstage naked is "actually a pretty powerful feeling. There's a constant shift in your mind from, 'Holy crap I'm standing here naked, this is a little weird,' to really getting involved in the piece you're reading or listening to, and back and forth again. She said there hasn't been an issue with anyone attending simply for a cheap thrill.
Occasionally we have people walk out a couple minutes into the first reading, but I think that's more that they weren't expecting actual nudity. It reminded me more of Naked Newsin which female newscasters present the news in the buff, than burlesque. The most intriguing part of the affair was the passages the women had picked and the ways they read them, whether delighting in a joke or playing up the linguistic oddities in A Clockwork Orange.
Nudity, though omnipresent, was a prop-a way to draw attention to, in this case, literature.
